Boston Marathon

35 Hong Kong residents started the Boston marathon yesterday in brutal heat. Running through the midday sun was pretty tough with temperatures up to 30C.
Amazing contrast to HK marathon, spectators

lined the whole route with bands playing, crowds cheering and a real carnival atmosphere. Over 500,000 people supported the athletes with some spraying garden hoses onto the course to cool things down.
My worst marathon time ever but the most fun by a long way.

Re: Boston Marathon

I ran too, yes absolutely brutal conditions, the 30c was in the shade, but unfortunately there was not much shade, more like 35c in the sun with not a cloud in the sky, and with a tailwind the whole there was little breeze to cool you down. It was like one of those Hong Kong hot and clear days in August!!

So absolutely not a day for running a good time, but as Simeon says, a real carnival atmosphere and amzing support the entire length of the route with bands, people handing out water, ice, fruit, popsicles etc, spraying the runners with garden hoses, and shouting encouragement the entire way. It really made a big differnece. A total contrast with HKSCM, where you only realy get any crowd support in the first and last couple of kms, and especially on a day like yesterday it really made a big difference. A real shame the organisers of HKSCM can't find a way to get more spectators onto the route, it is fantastic and makes it an event for the entire city rather than just a few thousand runners.

And for those wondering, compared to some of the proper hills we have in HK, Heartbreak Hill is just a little pimple :-) !

Re: Boston Marathon

well done and fully agree with comments about route and atmosphere . It must have been hot for runners from North America but a breeze for you after training in our heat and humidity :-)

Re: Boston Marathon

I ran too. Though Boston Marathon could be a once in a lifetime for me and my finishing time was disappointing under crazy heat, I still consider it a valuable / memorable experience. It's true it's touching to feel the support of the whole city people not only On the race day but over the whole period before and after. They are sincere and highly respect runners and the event. They value us not simply a runner but Boston Marathoners. Finish time is no longer important for this race. It certainly becomes an unforgetable memory: I have run not only Boston Marathon but the most tough one, that goes to history. Not many could experience it!
