Competitive Age Categories

The maximum age for today’s (8/10) HKHA 50K race was 55. As I (59) wanted to run the 50K, I asked the organizers, who said “no problem, but you will have to be in the senior category”. (If you want to see it, the entry form for this race is in Chinese only – since the vast majority of runners in HK are much happier with Chinese than with English.) I was happy with this, and as it turned out, I beat a much younger runner who beat me by 11 minutes in last week’s 36K race. I was also beaten by someone I beat last week. Age categories are to foster competition, I guess, so good luck to the seventy year old who wanted a V70 category, and presumably still has a competitive streak. I will not be looking at the results to find out who he is. If his name can’t be given, suggesting this way to identify him seems “weird”. If there is only one (or few) competitor in an age group, most organizers combine them. As Patrick said, longevity is increasing.
