New Shoes Problem. Help!
I just bought my first official pair of running shoes (Asics 2150) since I started running 10 weeks ago. They fit great the store (Athletics Nation). Just went out for my first test run today (easy 5K) and I noticed the insole for the left shoe (my left foot has moderate to severe overpronation) potentially will give me blister problems (didn't get blisters but I could see spots on my left arch on the verge of blisters just from a 5K run). I read some reviews online and it said it's because Asics decided to make the insole ridges sharper (versus the Asics 2140). As for my right foot (mild overpronation) the shoes fit like a glove and are super comfortable.
So my question is...what can I do? Do I:
- Find new insoles? If so, what kind of insoles should I buy (besides custom orthordics)? Where can I buy it?
- Maybe buy anti-blistering socks? Will that help the ridge blister problem? Where can I buy those in HK?
- Maybe 'fix' the insole ridge problem? Basically if arch ridge wasn't so sharp I would have zero issues.
Thanks!

Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
Hi Ken
I would try a few more runs and see if the problem (which looks like not too unusual for a pair of new shoes) continues, or change a pair of insoles to see if they make any difference. As this is only your first pair of shoes, you should still have plenty of money to invest into other brands/models to see which ones fit you most. It takes a lot of luck for your first pair of shoes also the ones that fit you most.
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
I had the same problem with some rubbing in the arch/instep area with a new pair of 2140 (left foot also). The second time running with the shoes, I used some Body Glide on the area and there were no problems. After a about half a dozen runs, there was no problem at all with or without Body Glide.
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
If I change my insoles where should I go buy it? What is your favorite running store in HK? I went to Athletic Nation in Mong Kok mainly because I thought they did gait analysis but it looks like they don't offer it anymore (liability reasons). Personally I thought the shop guy (Chris) there was quite knowledgeable and he helped me quite a bit. With that said there are 2 minor points about the store that makes we want to try another store:
1) It's in Mong Kok (I live on the South Side of HK Island)
2) Selection seems quite limited
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
Ok, I will try to buy some Body Glide and see what happens. Hopefully it fixes the problem while I break in my new 2150s...
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
So here is what I bought today:
- Body Glide
- Nike Cushioned Running Socks (with additional arch support). It's padded a little more at the arch area so that should help minimize the friction between the footbed and my arch.
Hope this works! Testing it out tomorrow!
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
You might also want to go to www.runnersworld.com and try lacing the shoes differntly and see if that helps.
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
Thanks! I am actually on Runner's World Beginner Forum and the kind people there already I showed me the video you are talking about. The thing is...this shoe problem doesn't really have anything to do with the laces. The problem is with the insole. Hopefully with the extra arch cushioning on the new socks + body glide on my arch I'm able to break in my new shoes without developing blisters.
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
I did not reckon what shoes I like until after 3 yrs since I started running, it's a trial and error exercise.
Try some other brands and models and most important of all, keep running instead of trying to fit your shoes.
We cannot change the shoes but we can change ourselves. After all, Asics does not fit everyone. I train with Mizuno and NB amd race with Asics.

Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
Thanks man. I ran with the shoes again today. My right foot...feels great. My left foot...still has that potential blister issue even with cushioned socks and body glide. I'm curious if it helps if:
While I am breaking in the shoe to run in the gym more since my feet will be sweat less versus running outside
Personally I prefer running outside way more so I may try to use some band-aids over the problem areas (it's 2 spots on my left arch) until my shoes are broken into or until I decide to get orthordics done.
Re: New Shoes Problem. Help!
Congrats on making a decision to start running.
I experienced similiar pain in a new pair of shoes when I first started running. I visited a local sports medicine practice, they put me on a treadmill and observed my gait. The first part of my problem is that I'm a really bad overpronator and the pain I experienced was plantar fasciitis. I switched to a pair of stability shoes, tossed in some SuperFeet insoles, and haven't looked back. I regularly run 10-15 miles without pain.
The second part of my problem was failure to stretch. The folks at the sports med-Alibaba. place gave me some specific stretches and exercises to do to solve the problem. It worked well for me, I'm pain free and have been for a while now
